Manufacturing at the scale required for nanotechnology demands pristine and controlled surfaces to create the desired structures, but maintaining this level of cleanliness over time may be difficult. Plasma technologies can be used to clean samples and microscopes, particularly of hydrocarbon molecules in electron microscopes.

When dispensing concentrated, caustic and costly chemicals with peristaltic pumps used in industrial cleaning applications, it is imperative to use high-performance pump tubing solutions. The first step is to know which performance properties to look for in industrial cleaning peristaltic pump and transfer tubing; equally important is how to properly maintain chemical dispensing systems to improve overall operating efficiency. High chemical resistance, pressure rating for chemical transfer, flexibility and maintaining chemical purity are key factors to consider.

Consideration of the antimicrobial efficacy of different biocides is an important basis on which to choose an effective disinfectant regime appropriate to the hygiene requirements in a production plant. Alcohols act rapidly and effectively against bacteria, mycobacteria, fungi and viruses but do not possess sporicidal efficacy. Quaternary ammonium compounds have no effect against bacterial spores or mycobacteria, while guanidines have better efficacy against Gram-negative bacteria, but are poorer against yeasts and moulds. Sources of contamination are also a crucial factor.

A new cleanroom tool makes invisible hazards visible and highlights areas that have been overlooked during the cleaning and disinfection process. UV light is emitted from a torch and excites the electrons in the atoms or molecules of the particles in question. These absorb the energy from the torch temporarily and emit it as light, making visible particles that cannot be seen by the naked eye.
