Plasma cleaning goes under the microscope– 29-Jan-2013
Manufacturing at the scale required for nanotechnology demands pristine and controlled surfaces to create the desired structures, but maintaining this level of cleanliness over time may be difficult. Plasma technologies can be used to clean samples and microscopes, particularly of hydrocarbon molecules in electron microscopes.
Splitting the difference– 4-Dec-2012
Microfibre is the main material now used for cleanroom wipes for its ability to pick up and retain particle and for its high sorptive capacity. However, it is expensive and therefore not suitable for single use, but laundering mops and wipes carries a risk of degrading performance and cross-contamination.
Wipe study measures particle shedding– 30-Aug-2012
A recent study into particle generation from non-cleanroom and cleanroom wipes demonstrated that the wipes made from the appropriate materials, prepared under cleanroom conditions and sterilised are suitable for the cleanest conditions (particularly ISO Class 5 environments), whereas wipes prepared under less stringent conditions and marketed for a lower class of cleanroom should be restricted to such areas due to the high numbers of particles generated.
Testing for spores in laundry water– 29-Aug-2012
Among the most common microbiological contaminations in commercial laundries are bacteria that turn into permanent forms, so-called spores, under life-threatening conditions. These endospores formed by the bacteria are extremely resistant, for example, to hot and cold temperatures, or to drying out. This high chemical and thermal resistance means that spores are not safely inactivated or killed during disinfecting washing processes
Sterilisation with steam– 29-Aug-2012
Steam sterilisation is still a popular choice for the medical device industry because it is very effective and relatively cheap and quick. To maintain sterility, the devices require packaging that acts as a sterile barrier after the sterilisation process. This means that the cycle has to be suitable, not only for the devices, but also for the associated packaging. Cycle development starts in the design phase with the choice of the materials of construction and packaging.
