Turning the tables on vibration – 22-Mar-2012

As nanoscale equipment becomes more prevalent, lab sites are being set up in more severe vibration-prone environments, such as upper floors of buildings and cleanrooms. Traditional pneumatic vibration isolators – air tables – are increasingly challenged by the requirements of more sensitive equipment and expanded lab facilities. Negative-Stiffness isolation is rapidly gaining popularity in industrial and laboratory environments, mainly because of its ability to isolate vibration effectively in diverse and challenging environments.

Designing isolators with reliability– 29-Feb-2012

Reliability and efficiency are two major hurdles to overcome in pharmaceutical containment, but can be overcome through proper planning. This must result in robust, ergonomic isolator design, taking into account the need to modify process equipment, powder handling requirements, explosion risk, cleaning regimes, glove material choice and sampling procedures.

Probing Antarctica’s pristine lake– 24-Feb-2012

A sterile probe that will work in extreme conditions has been designed and built to drill through overlying ice into an under-ice lake in Antarctica to investigate the history of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. All equipment must be sterile to ensure the samples are not contaminated and that no contamination is passed into the pristine lake.

Filling solution for animal vaccines– 21-Dec-2011

A Flexicon PD12P peristaltic dispensing pump is at the centre of a sterile vial filling system for the processing of animal vaccines. A customised flange was engineered to keep the pump drive and control panel outside the isolator, with only the pumphead sited within it. The peristaltic filling action means that the product is in contact only with the sterile tubing and the filling nozzle.

Creating a storm in aseptic processing– 8-Jul-2011

Vaccine delivery and drug stability present problems that can be overcome through aseptic processing using gassed isolator technology.
