Find out what makes a cleanroom fit for the 21st century
The construction and building services division of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) is holding a one-day seminar to examine the latest developments in the cleanroom industry – from energy consumption and ‘greener’ cleanrooms to the latest filtration standards and regulatory approval guidelines. To be held in London on 30 September, 2009, the event aims to be a comprehensive guide to the latest developments in the industry.
The opening address will be given by Professor Colin Pillinger, of the Planetary and Space Science Research Institute, Open University. As the leader of the Beagle project, a public-private partnership to land a spacecraft on Mars as part of ESA’s Mars Express Mission, he has many years of experience in using cleanrooms.
Greg Kiernan, senior engineer at SciTech, will consider non-mechanical air cleaning techniques – what techniques are available, their applications and energy and effectiveness comparisons. The issues involved in melding ISO 14644-1 & 2 with EU GMP Annex 1 for sterile products cleanrooms will be considered by Gordon Farquharson, of Bovis Lend Lease, while Robert Bowen will give an overview of current UK legislation and practical strategies relating to energy efficiency and sustainability.
The question of regulatory inspections and obligations will be addressed by John Seagrief, director of sterile manufacture, R5 Pharmaceuticals, after which Dick Gibbons, chairman, Contamination Control Group of the SEE, will look at surface particulates and surface chemistry.
The final session of the seminar will focus on filters. John Neiger, cleanroom consultant, Envair, will pose the question of whether HEPA filters are over-specified, and Neil Stephenson, technical director, DOP Solutions, will consider how filter testing methods can be improved to foster a cleaner, greener and safer environment. The seminar will also offer delegates the opportunity to participate in a roundtable discussion forum, where a variety of topics will be discussed.
