Howorth project for Royal Liverpool Hospital completes to schedule

Howorth has installed its Exflow Ultra Clean ventilation canopy in operating theatres at the Royal Liverpool Hospital

Howorth Air Technology has completed a project at the Royal Liverpool Hospital, part of the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust in the UK.

Bolton-based Howorth upgraded Theatres 9 and 10 by installing its Exflow Ultra Clean ventilation canopy, which has made both theatres suitable for orthopaedic surgery, as well as the full range of general surgery.

The project, which delivers the latest technological advances in operating theatre design, was completed on schedule, in spite of the construction work having to take place next to a live operating department, making it essential to keep dust, noise and general disturbance to an absolute minimum.

Howorth has equipped the theatres with lateral movement pendants and Martin MarLED operating lights.

The contract included the replacement of all engineering services and major structural building modifications to accommodate the Exflow 28 canopies through the existing concrete viewing gallery soffits. Construction of a substantial structural framework was necessary to support the new theatre equipment.

Entrance and installation of goods required additional project management expertise as the theatres are on the 11th floor, with all associated plant equipment installed on the 12th floor roof.

“They have an excellent flexible approach, essential when working with operational departments. I would not hesitate to recommend Howorth Air Technology to carry out the installation of any new or refurbished facilities,” commented Peter Leadbetter, project engineering manager, Redevelopment Project – Royal Liverpool University Hospital.
