Antimicrobial polymer combats MRSA infections

AdvanSource Biomaterials Corporation, a US manufacturer of advanced polymer technologies and materials for medical devices, has received a "Notice of Allowance" from the US Patent and Trademark Office in connection with its patent application (US Patent No. 7,772,296, entitled “Antimicrobial Polyurethane Resins and Products Made Therefrom”) filed in June 2007, covering an antimicrobial technology to eradicate MRSA infections associated with medical devices.
The company incorporates the antimicrobial agent using advanced polymer technologies during the synthesis of a resin. The resultant antimicrobial polymers may be used as structural components or as coatings in venus, arterial and urological catheters.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 250,000 catheter-related bloodstream infections cost the US healthcare system about US$4.6bn a year.
